Buddhism is an ancient Eastern religion with many of its teachings used in mindfulness therapy. The reason may be quite simply that they relate to everyday life and a lot of the teachings promote compassion, positivity and love. It connects with our spiritual self, creating a greater understanding.

‘Buddha’ is actually a title, meaning ‘one who is awake’, i.e., woken up to reality. The figure we know as Buddha was born as Siddhartha Gautama, in Nepal around 2,500 years ago. He was a simple human-being who was jolted out of a reported privileged upbringing, after realising life includes harsh facts, such as, sickness, sadness and death.

He left his palace to follow the traditional Indian holy-man path of solitude, meditation and practising self-discipline. On his journey, he came to realise that he had to trust his own intuition and experiences and looked into his own heart and mind to find the meaning of life.

It’s said that after 40 days sat under a pipal tree, alone, he gained enlightenment. He had the deepest insight into life and humanity. He spent the remaining 45 years of his life spreading his wisdom and understanding.

With this being International Stress Awareness Week, we’ve compiled a list of 10 Buddhist-inspired quotes to help make your days a bit better:

“Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.” – Buddha

“If the problem can be solved why worry? If the problem cannot be solved, worrying will do you no good.” ― Śāntideva

“We all have to live together, so we might as well live together happily.” – Dalai Lama

“Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions.” – Dalai Lama

“No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.” – Buddha

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.” – Buddha

“We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.” – Buddha

“Choose to be optimistic, it feels better.” ― Dalai Lama

“The true hero is one who conquers his own anger and hatred.” – Dalai Lama

If you’re having a bad moment, hopefully one of these quotes can help you realise that things aren’t always as bad as they seem and a positive approach goes a long way to producing your desired outcome. You can find links below if you want to explore Bhudda, and his inspirational quotes, further.
